India at 2017 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships

The World Gymnastics Championships were held earlier this year in Montreal, Canada from the 2nd to the 8th of October. The first championships held after the post Olympic year is one where there is no team competition. Gymnasts must contend for individual event and all round medals. Every country is permitted to send a delegation of four female and four male gymnasts.

After the success of Dipa Karmakar last year at the Olympics, the scale should move upward with better performances and more exposure for the gymnasts competing at the international stage.

The Indian men’s team led by Rakesh Kumar Patra fought hard but did not come home with medals this championships. The leader competed two of his strongest events, Still Rings and Parallel Bars, where he finished 52nd and 62nd respectively. The two all-rounders Yogeshwar Singh (who also came in 1st at the trials held within the country) and Siddharth Verma competed all six events and stood 41st and 53rd in the competition. The final member Dhan Bahadur competed only event, his strongest being Pommel Horse, where he came in 53rd.

Unfortunately none of the gymnasts made it past the qualifying round into the event finals since it requires the gymnasts to place in the top 8 on any given event.

The complete set of scores can be found on the table below.

Name Floor Pommel Horse Still Rings Vault Parallel Bars Horizontal bar Total Rank
Yogeshwar Singh 11.900 11.933 11.333 13.800 12.766 11.633 73.365 41
Sidharth Verma 10.333 11.466 11.033 13.633 11.866 11.166 69.497 53
Rakesh Patra 13.233 12.833 26.066
Dhan Bahadur 12.766 12.766

On the women’s side, the Indian contingent decided to send only two athletes for the competition. Pranati Nayak and Aruna Reddy competed all four women’s apparatus. The strongest event for both the gymnasts was vault where they placed 47th and 43rd respectively.

The detailed set of results can be found on the table below.

Name Vault Uneven Bars Beam Floor Total Rank
Pranati Nayak 13.400 10.333 10.033 9.100 42.866 68
Aruna Budda Reddy 13.433 09.733 9.033 10.666 42.865 69

This is a call for Indian Gymnastics as a whole for a change to be made within the system. After the success of Dipa Karmakar last year at the Olympics, the scale should move upward with better performances and more exposure for the gymnasts competing at the international stage. The next Olympics are not too far and a change needs to be made for the betterment of the gymnasts if we hope to bring India medals in this beautiful sport.

Here we are posting few routines of Indian Gymnasts from this World championships.
